Why Body-Powered Innovation Belongs in the O&P Classroom

Before interning at Marins Inc., I assumed most innovation in upper-limb prosthetics was happening in the robotics department and was already advanced. Becoming an intern changed my perspective that more education and advancement is needed on the topic.
For example, the Cape Gazette recently highlighted Marins’ work developing the ProHensor®, a body-powered terminal device created by co-founder Darryl DuBre. As an amputee himself, Darryl recognized that while body-powered prosthetics have served users well for decades, there was still room to improve comfort, function, and performance. That perspective is a reminder that innovation often begins with understanding the everyday experiences of the people using the technology.
As prosthetic technology continues to evolve, students should be introduced not only to the latest electronic systems but also to modern advances in body-powered devices. These systems remain an important option for many patients because of their reliability, durability, and ability to perform in demanding environments. Understanding when and why a body-powered prosthesis is the right choice is just as important as learning about newer electronic alternatives.
The story behind Marins also highlights another lesson worth bringing into the classroom: meaningful innovation often comes through collaboration. Engineers, clinicians, researchers, and prosthetic users each contribute a different perspective, and the best solutions are created when those perspectives come together.
As an intern, one of the biggest takeaways I've had is that innovation isn't limited to creating something entirely new. Sometimes it's about improving a trusted design to better serve the people who depend on it every day.
If O&P programs continue exposing students to both emerging technology and modern body-powered innovation, they'll be preparing future clinicians to deliver more personalized care—and ultimately better outcomes for the patients they serve.
